And another one bites the dust.
Four days after the Browns dropped out of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes by trading for Tyrod Taylor, the Broncos appear to have followed suit.
Free-agent quarterback Case Keenum “intends” to sign with the Broncos, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Appearing on ESPN early Tuesday morning, Schefter said, "barring some last-minute setback in negotiations,” the 30-year-old Keenum is headed to Denver.
The Broncos had inside knowledge into Keenum due to senior personnel advisor and former coach Gary Kubiak's relationship with the free-agent quarterback. Kubiak coached Keenum for two seasons (2013-2014) when Kubiak was the Texans head coach.
The Broncos were one of four teams that were viewed as the favorites to sign Cousins, the premier quarterback in this year’s free-agent class. That list is now trimmed down to the Jets, Vikings and Cardinals.
Out of those three teams, the Jets have the most cap space available, but the Vikings offer Cousins the best supporting cast to immediately compete for a Super Bowl.
Signing Keenum now opens the door for the Broncos to pass on a quarterback and trade down out of the No. 5 spot, which could result in a QB-needy team jumping ahead of the Jets in the draft.
Keenum resurrected his career in Minnesota this past season, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions en route to leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game.
