Flippin’ Heck: The Best Places To Eat Pancakes In London

Boondocks, east London’s response to the soul food movement, boasts some of the finest all-American pancakes this side of New Orleans. This Shrove Tuesday, get a ticket to their pancake feast, with a selection of the most deviously indulgent toppings from banana caramel nut to chocolate chip plus a cocktail of your choice. Can’t decide which one? It’s all you can eat, so get one of each and roll home happy.

My Old Dutch, Kensington, Holborn and Chelsea

With three London venues, you could easily embark on a pancake version of a pub crawl, should you so wish. My Old Dutch is a firm London favourite with an ever expanding imaginatively indulgent menu selection. Cancel your diet for the night and wash down your Marshmallow Explosion with a Ferrer Rocher shake. You won’t regret it.

Café Miami, Clapton

This Clapton local is one of London’s hidden pancake gems, with a serious dedication to both sweet and savoury fare. For the whole week of Shrove Tuesday, they’ll even be serving a special menu with such delights as pineapple pancakes with brown sugar and bacon, plus the coronary-inducing Pancake Sandwich filled with melted cheese, scrambled egg, bacon and maple syrup.

Yum Yums, Bexley

Just five years old, this unassuming Bexley restaurant is a cheery place with an expansive American pancake selection all year-round. From classic maple syrup and bacon options to peanut butter and banana with whipped cream, you’re spoilt for choice. Pop by for the pancakes, stay for the friendly atmosphere.

Pickle & Rye, Mortlake

This south-west London all-American restaurant is your go-to spot for great sticky ribs, Cajun burgers and BBQ pulled pork. They also make a mean pancake and, this Shrove Tuesday, they’ll be expanding the menu, with special extras and new flavours. Plus, they even Deliveroo: should you fancy your pancakes at home in your PJs.

Where the Pancakes Are, Southwark

It’s all in the name really. Where the Pancakes Are is certainly where you’ll find one of London’s most extensive pancake selections. There’s something for all palates here; from the Hummingbird with cinnamon poached pineapple to the 100 Baby Greens veggie option, that features green chili and lime-coriander butter. The restaurant is running a pop up in Flat Iron Square, Southwark, this Shrove Tuesday, where there will be three-legged pancake races and, yes, lots and lots of pancakes to scoff.

La Creperié de Hampstead, Hampstead

The Americans may have the monopoly on our attention when it comes to pancakes, but don’t underestimate the humble French crepe. La Creperié de Hampstead is a north London institution; a street stall that became a permanent resident in Hampstead High Street in 1980. The winding queues are legendary and with good reason. This is the best crepe you’ll find outside of Paris and a brilliant Shrove Tuesday treat.
