Honda Revives Insight Nameplate For Civic Based 50 MPG Hybrid Sedan

Honda revives the Insight nameplate, in an more conventional, “upmarket” sedan

This week, Honda’s Insight nameplate – representing the first commercially-available hybrid in the U.S. market – returns to the fold. Back in 1999, the first-generation Insight emerged as a three-door hatchback. It sported funky, unorthodox styling and hybrid technology that rose to prominence in the 2000’s and still runs strong today. Now, the 2019 Honda Insight Prototype brings a familiar name to a new, albeit more conventional face.

The 2019 Honda Insight sits on a long wheelbase platform, emphasizing a lower, sleeker stance than its predecessors. With Honda’s signature “flying wing” grille and LED headlights, it looks a lot like the larger Accord and the smaller Civic.

2019 Honda Insight Features

The Insight’s headlining feature, as it was with the original, is fuel economy. This time around, the 2019 Honda Insight will score anticipated mileage somewhere in the 50 MPG range. That efficiency comes courtesy of a 1.5-liter Atkinson-style engine coupled with a new generation of Honda’s hybrid system. Exact power figures aren’t available at this time, but Honda claims the Insight will deliver “class-leading” power while remaining incredibly efficient.

Being a modern Honda, the Insight features all the safety amenities you’d come to expect in its gas-powered siblings. That includes Honda LaneWatch on EX and above models. You can also get the Honda Sensing suite, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Low-Speed Follow with Traffic Sign Recognition.

Availability

Honda will manufacture the 2019 Insight at its Greensburg, Indiana plant, with its Civic and CR-V siblings. No prices are available yet, but the Insight should arrive at dealers later this year.
