Smokies Snap Shuckers’ Winning Streak

News Release

BILOXI, MS. - The Biloxi Shuckers snapped the Tennessee Smokies five-game winning streak with a 6-5 victory on Thursday night at MGM Park. The win gives Biloxi its first series-opening win since the team defeated the Mobile BayBears on April 12, and puts the Shuckers 10 games above .500 for the second time this season. The Shuckers have opened a 3.5 game lead over Pensacola in the South Division.

The big inning came around to strike Adrian Houser again on Thursday night, as the right-hander surrendered three runs in the third to put the Shuckers in an early hole.

Carlos Penalver advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rob Zastryzny after singling to start the frame. Jacob Hannemann\'s infield single put runners on the corners for Chesny Young, who sent a drive off the left field wall to plate Penalver for the first run of the game.

A free pass to Jeimer Candelario loaded the bases for Victor Caratini, who struck out for the second out of the inning. Houser could not escape the jam with limited damage, as Billy McKinney singled to right to bring home two to put the Shuckers in a three run-deficit.

Biloxi (15-5) got to Zastryzny (2-1) in the fourth to take the lead.

Jacob Nottingham (1x3, R, BB) singled up the middle to start things out for the home team, and after a flyout by Garrett Cooper (1x3, BB), the catcher advanced to second on a single off the bat of Victor Roache (2x4, R). Javier Betancourt (1x4, R, 2B, RBI) continued to come up big with the bat with a run-scoring double to left to put Biloxi in the board, scoring Nottingham on the play.

Chris McFarland (1x3, R, HR, 3 RBI) then launched a two-strike pitch over the wall in left to put the Shuckers up a run on the 23-year-old\'s first home run of the season. The homer was his first since July 13, 2015 while playing for A+ Brevard County.

Betancourt extended his on-base streak to 14 games and his hitting streak to a team-best seven games with the 1-for-4 performance.

The advantage did not last long as Hannemann took the first pitch of the fifth inning over the wall in left to tie the game at five apiece.

Houser (1-2) finished out the fifth inning without allowing another run, and finished the night with four runs allowed on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts on 87 pitches - 53 for strikes.

Biloxi utilized a pinch hit double from Parker Berberet (1x1, R, 2B) to start the fifth to its benefit, as Brett Phillips (2x4, 2 RBI) would single the runner home two batters later to retake the lead.

Phillips drove in Kyle Wren (1x1, R) in the seventh to give the Shuckers some insurance with a 6-4 lead.

Tristan Archer was the first reliever summoned out of the bullpen for Mike Guerrero, and the righty worked two scoreless innings to preserve the lead, allowing one hit and punching out one. Jed Bradley followed and allowed a run in 0.2 before being pulled for Stephen Kohlscheen, who caused a fly out from Penalver to escape the jam with the one-run lead intact.

Jaye Chapman (SV, 9) converted his minor-league baseball leading ninth save of the season by working around a two-out single and striking out the side in the ninth.

Biloxi and Tennessee (11-10) move on to game two of the five-game set on Friday night at MGM Park.
