Toby Young has been forced to quit his second government-linked role following a sexism row.

The 54-year-old yesterday resigned as director of free school charity, New Schools Network (NSN), in the wake of a row over misogynistic comments.

He became the focus of controversy earlier this year due to his short-lived appointment as a board member of the new universities regulator, the Office for Students (OfS).

In a statement published on the NSN website yesterday, the trustees said: 'Toby has concluded that the media attention his continuing presence at the helm of NSN is attracting has become a distraction from the vital work it is doing and, for that reason, he has decided to step down.'

The charity, which is almost wholly funded by the government, said it would announce an interim director 'in due course'.

The Department for Education this week reluctantly reappointed the NSN to a multi-million-pound contract supporting applicants wanting to open free schools - only after no other applicants came forward, according to reports.

Mr Young, who founded the West London Free School in Hammersmith in 2011, had held his position at the charity since January 2017.

He took over from Theresa May's former adviser, Nick Timothy, and was paid £90,000-a-year.

Mr Young, who writes for The Spectator, said yesterday: 'NSN is a wonderful charity and it has been a great honour to serve as its Director.

'It has been a privilege to work alongside (…) all NSN's dedicated employees, who are doing so much to raise educational standards in some of the most disadvantaged parts of the country.'

In January, Mr Young was appointed as one of 15 members of the government-approved universities watchdog OfS, tasked with ensuring students get value for money.

But the government faced a furious backlash after details emerged of crude and offensive comments he had made in the past.

He had written articles praising 'progressive eugenics' and mocking the inclusivity agenda, as well as posting crude comments on social media, including about women's breasts.

Mr Young was forced to stand down from the OfS nine days after his appointment was announced. He apologised for his comments.

The appointment was subsequently criticised by the commissioner for public appointments, who said the government's due diligence had been 'inadequate', and that the process had been conducted in a manner which compromised 'the principle of fairness'.

A Department for Education spokesman said yesterday: 'The role of director is entirely a matter for New Schools Network's trustees.'
