TOBY YOUNG has quit his role as universities tsar after a Commons row broke out on his appointment.
Last night Andrea Leadsom confronted the PM over his appointment - she had previously described comments he made online as “unacceptable”.
The journalist and free schools campaigner quit his role just days after Theresa May warned him that he would be sacked if he made any other abusive comments online. She was "not impressed" and said he must not do it again.
He said today that his appointment had become a "distraction" from the "vital work" of the Office for Students - which was established to hold universities to account on issues like vice chancellor's pay and free speech on campus.
Young said sorry for his past comments which were "ill-judged or just plain wrong".
Writing in the Spectator he said: "The caricature drawn of me in the last seven days, particularly on social media, has been unrecognisable to anyone who knows me."
Mr Young was appointed to the board of the regulator last week because of his work in setting up acclaimed free schools.
He was defended by ministers included Universities Minister Jo Johnson, and his brother Boris - who slammed the "ridiculous outcry" on his former tweets.
It came as a petition calling for him to be sacked passed more than 200,000 signatures.
He previously made a string of inappropriate messages about women, including making a sick joke about masturbating over Comic Relief and perving over celebrities.
The storm grew as senior Tory MP Robert Halfon urged minister to rethink his appointment in the Commons yesterday.
The chair of the powerful Commons education committee highlighted “dark” and “dangerous” articles written by him in the past.
Ridiculous outcry over Toby Young. He will bring independence, rigour and caustic wit. Ideal man for job— Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) January 3, 2018
“And I’m not talking about the things he’s done on Twitter.
“What I’m more concerned about is some quite dark articles where he talks about the disabled, where he talks about the working classes, and much more significantly in 2015 - and I have the article here - on what he calls progressive eugenics.
“Now, I find this incredibly dark and very dangerous stuff, and I suggest that he looks again at this appointment, because I do not think it will put confidence in students.”
He said this morning that Mr Young had done the "honourable thing" by resigning from his post.
Shadow Equalities Minister Dawn Butler also waded in to attack Mr Young’s position, saying she had lost her sense of humour if it included making jokes about masturbating over pictures of dying and starving children.

But Mr Johnson defended the new board member on his Office for Students saying he had apologised and should be judged on his deeds.
He said the free school pioneer’s masturbation tweet was 8 or 9 years old and he has “been on a developmental journey” since then.
A source close to Mrs Leadsom confirmed she had found Mr Young’s comments “unacceptable”.
