Full Metal Jacket actor R. Lee Ermey died Sunday at the age of 74 due to complications from pneumonia. He is survived by his wife, Nila Ermey, and their four children.
Nila Ermey was married to the actor for 43 years, according to his profile on the Internet Movie Database. On his short-lived 2009 reality television series Lock 'N Load With R. Lee Ermey, he called her "Mrs. Gunny." Despite Ermey having a reality show, Nila managed to remain out of the spotlight for the most part. In the wake of the actor's death, Nila did not immediately release a statement.
Ermey's longtime manager, Bill Rogin, confirmed the actor's death Sunday on his official Facebook page. "It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people," Rogin wrote. "And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform.
"The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need," Rogin continued.Recommended Slideshowsimg src="http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/sm/public/2018/02/23/royal-wedding-harry-meghan.jpg" alt="Royal Wedding Harry Meghan"">>37Who Will Be Invited to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Wedding?>img src="http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/sm/public/2018/04/10/image-00.jpg" alt="00"">>5150 Best-Selling Albums in U.S. History>img src="http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/sm/public/2018/03/02/image-00.jpg" alt="00"">>51In Pictures: The 50 Most Powerful Military Forces in the World>
Rogin concluded the statement by asking for Ermey's fans to stand by all persons in uniform, as he suggested "that's what he wanted most of all."
Ermey, born Ronald Lee Ermey, was best known for his role of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in the movie Full Metal Jacket. One of his first film roles was in Apocalypse Now. He had recurring roles and guest appearances on shows like Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Scrubs, Family Guy and The Simpsons. He also lent his voice to a number of video games, including Disney Magic Kingdom and Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Though his résumé boasts years worth of credits in film, television and video games, it was his famous role in Full Metal Jacket that earned him a 1988 Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Aside from his acting endeavors, Ermey served in the Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant from 1961 to 1971. "When I went into the Marine Corps, I had all kinds of playmates, all kinds of brothers and friends," Ermey, who served honorably, told ABC News in 2014. "I like that aspect of it."
